WASHINGTON (AP) Wayne Rooney's fifth goal of the season put D.C. United ahead in the second half, but Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his third tying goal in the 90th minute to give the New York Red Bulls a 3-3 draw Sunday.
Rooney, a former England captain who made his Major League Soccer debut in July, gave D.C. United a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute when he one-touched Oniel Fisher's cross. Rooney also sent a shot off the crossbar in the 73rd minute, was denied on a breakaway in the 80th and had a corner kick in the second minute of stoppage time that was headed of a post.
Wright-Phillips became the second player in MLS history to score three tying goals in a game after Atlanta forward Josef Martinez last season, and he finished with his first hat trick since May 28, 2016. He scored in the 41st minute with a bicycle-kick goal off a rebound, rolled in a goal in the 76th and redirected a cross for his third goal. Wright-Phillips has 19 league goals, second only to Martinez's 28. (MORE)
